Convert to Catholicism; owner and editor of the New York Freeman's Journal and Catholic Register beginning in 1846; opponent of Protestantism and the policies of Abraham Lincoln. The journal was banned from the mails by the Postmaster General (August 1861 - April 1862) and McMaster was briefly imprisoned.

Correspondence with bishops, priests, prominent Catholics, and relatives, especially his son John; and drafts of a series of articles on prophecies.
