Correspondence written and received by Rev. Paul Joseph Foik, C.S.C., regarding the Catholic Library Association and the chief project of the Association's early years -- the Catholic Periodical Index. Foik (1879-1941) served as librarian and archivist at Notre Dame from 1912 to 1924. He was librarian and history professor at St Edward's University (Austin, Texas) from 1924 until his death in 1941. Foik was a founder of the Library Section of the National Catholic Educational Association in 1921, which became the Catholic Library Association (CLA) in 1931. He served on the executive council of the CLA, and chaired several committees during the 1930's. At one point he chaired the editorial committee for the Catholic Periodical Index. The following description does not attempt to list every individual document, but generally an entry will appear for persons whose correspondence with Foik during this period consists of ten or more letters. The majority of the second reel consists of executive council correspondence with Rev Colman Farrell, O.S.B., and William FitzGerald, the presidents of the CLA for most of the thirties. Reel two seems to be damaged as a series of letters to and from William Stinson, S.J., ostensibly containing 28 items at the end of the reel, only has two letters. This series is not finished on reel three.
